Adolph Louis "Punce" Barrett

   Adolph Louis “Punce” Barrett, 85, of Redby, died Sunday, Feb. 8, 2004, in the Jourdain/Perpich Extended Care Center in Red Lake.

   The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Red Lake with the Rev. Past Sullivan officiating. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the Cease Family Funeral Home in Bemidji. Burial will be in the spring in St. Antipas Episcopal Cemetery in Redby under the direction of the Cease Family Funeral Home.

   Pallbearers will be Charles Barrett, Eric Winegardner, Ricky Barrett, Bob Whitefeather, Jr., Duane Cobenais III and Derrick Cobenais.

   Honorary pallbearers will be Larry Dudley, John Barrett, Archie Barrett, Randy Barrett, Quentin Fairbanks, Mickey Fairbanks, Derald “Ola” Cobenais and Louis Rock.

   Adolph was born at home on February 24, 1918, to Charles and Mary (Smith) Barrett in Red Lake. He was raised and educated in Red Lake, attending St. Mary’s Mission School. He worked for the CCC in the 1930s. Then he started work at the Redby Sawmill in 1937. He drove truck, did maintenance, was an electrician, and was the head millwright. He married Rachel Chaboyea on September 17, 1940, in Redby. He served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in the Philippines during World War II. He was a Redby District Representatie for the Red Lake Tribal Council for 16 years from 1966 until 1982. He helped develop the Jourdain/Perpich Extended Care Center and was a member of the Red Lake Hospital governing board. He retired from the Sawmill in 1977. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, visiting with people, playing cards, going to the casino and flying small planes.

   He is survived by his wife, Rachel Barrett of Redby; children, Richard (Lucy) Barrett of Red Lake, David Barrett of Minneapolis, Mary Winegardner of Redby; brothers, Archie (Joyce) Barrett of Red Lake, John Barrett of Grand Rapids; sisters, Florence (Gordon) Bailey of Keewatin, MN, Della (Bill) Kinney of Becker, MN; 14 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren and an aunt.

   He is preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Harold and Robert ‘Bobby’ Barrett; son, Darrell.Barrett; and a granddaughter.
