Blood quantum at Red Lake
was determined - as it was on most Indian reservations - through a
process of politics and genealogy. It was 'readjusted' by the
B.I.A. in the early 1930s, and again on the 1958-59 Red Lake "Base
Rolls" established pursuant to the Indian Reorganization Act.
When the blood quantums were set in the Base Rolls, the only ancestry
that was "counted" was "Red Lake" - according to the rules established
by the B.I.A. under the 1934 Indian Reorganization Act.
"Blood quantum" is the source of many problems and unfairness all
across 'Indian country.' Unless we made a mistake in
transcription (possible but unlikely), the record on this website is a
copy of the official and unofficial records cited in the "notes for"
section.
Establishing blood quantum and enrollment at Red Lake are under the
control of the Red Lake tribal council.
