He was Head Chief of the Mississippi bands and received the first
allotment on the White Earth Reservation and his first wife received the
second. Chief White Cloud was considered a wise and eloquent speaker. He
was already a chief in 1868 when he moved from Gull Lake to the White Earth
Reservation. He received the first allotment on the White Earth Reservation
and his wife received the second. He was Head Chief of the Mississippi Bands.
His first wife was Pah-gwa-je-quay, by whom he had a son, the Rev. Charles T.
Wright, who became Chief after the death of his father.
From Swan, Anna Whitefisher, half sister of Chief Wah-bon-ah-quod: 'When
Anna Whitefisher Swan had been married about two years, this band of Indians
were moved from Gull Lake to White Earth. They were moved by Chief Wah-bon-
ah-quot, their leader, and the Government wanted them to move from their
present home because the land around White Earth was good farm land and the
Government wanted them to farm. They were moved in the year of 1868 from
Gull Lake, their past home, to White Earth. There were about two hundred
people moved at this time. All their belongings and possessions were loaded on
wagons drawn by oxen teams. There were eleven oxen teams and one team of
horses. Most of the people had to walk. They had a road from Gull Lake to
Ottertail Lake but from thre on they had to make their own road to White Earth.
The Sioux Indians followed them from Ottertail Lake till they got to White
Earth. The Sioux Indians kept far enough behind so they could not be seen by
the Ojiways. The Sioux Indians did not try to attack the Ojibways but probably
just wanted to see where they were going. But nevertheless the men were on the
watchout for any attack. The women watched during the day while the men slept,
and the men watched during the night. They reached 'Trading Post' which was
located about three miles north of White Earth at noon on June 14, 1868. Every
year since they arrived on this date, they celebrated June 145h in
remembrance of the Indians moving to White Earth.'
Chief Wah-bon-ah-quod was the last of the Head Chiefs of the Mississippi band
of Indians around White Earth, Minnesota.
