Murphy Thomas, Sr., 81, of Ponemah died Thursday, June 30, 1994 at the
University of Minnesota Hospitals in Minneapolis.
Funeral services are at 2 p.m. Monday at the Ponemah Community Center, in the
Indian custom. A wake began Saturday at the Ponemah Community Center and
continues until the time of services. Interment will be in the family burial
grounds in Poneamh under the direction of the Cease Family Funeral Home of
Bemidji.
Honorary pallbearers will be all Red Lake and Ponemah ambulance drivers.
Active pallbearers will be Rudy and Lloyd Johnson, Vincent Graves, Vornon and
Bobby Whitefeather, and Dave Clark.
Mr. Thomas ws born Nov. 19, 1913, at Ponemah, the son of John and Emma
Thomas. He grup up and went to school there and at Pipestone. He surved in
the Army Air Corps from 1942-45 in the Asiatic, Pacific, European, African and
Middle Eastern theatres. He married Katherine Cloud on April 2, 1947, at
Ponemah. He worked for the U.S. Forestry Service in Red Lake for a number of
years and also was a commercial fisherman and a logger. He was one of the
first ambulance drivers for the Ponemah Ambulance in 1967 until retiring in
1981. He was a lifetime member of Red Lake VFW Post 6889.
He is survived by three daughters, Jeanette and Parbara Thomas, both of
Ponemah, and Fraces Miller of Grand Portage; three sons, Richard Cloud of Red
Lake, and Murphy Thomas Jr. and Robert Thomas, both of Ponemah; 13
grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a sister, Jane Whitefeather of
Ponemah; and several nieces and nephews.
Hw as preceded in death by his wife June 11, 1992; two sons, Ronald M. Cloud
and Ellsworth Black; and a brother,
Pete.
