They lived on the Red Lake Reservation.

In 1878 Rev. Fred W. Smith, John Coleman, George Smith, J.A. Gilfillan and
perhaps others embarked in two canoes and went to Wahashing to form a mission
there, taking along the workmen to put up the buildings. The Indians there met
th eparty, and although they had previously requested the buildings and the
mission they would not now allow them to be built nor the party to stay there.
The party started back in quite a storm, some of them being driven to
Ondatasonaning. Rev. Fred W. Smith suggested building his church at Old
Chief's Village or Ondataonaning where they wanted it, rather than at
Wabashing, where they would not have it. The old Chief Medwe-ganonind readily
granted the late Mr. Long (William) undertook the building, and in December
1898 the church was opened for Divine Service. The Old Chief was one of the
first to enter the Church by baptism, and encouraged all his people to do so.
Before there was a bell he used to go all round his village at service time and
call the people to church. Rev. George Smith arrived at Red Lake Agency on
August 21, 1899, and immediately began services at Old Chiefs Village in
Medwe-ganonint's house. He was joined by his brother Rev. John Coleman in
December 1898, who came from White Earth at the time the Church was finished.
About November 29, 1898, the two brothers took up their residence in Old
Chief's Village. Rev. George Smith continued there three or four years, when
he was sent to Lake Winnibigoshish. He taught a free day school nearly all the
time he was there. There were from 20 to 30 scholars. Rev. John Coleman
continued there about 5 years, when he left, being suspended for two
years.

George Smith (Ketchi-no-din) signed the 1889 agreement at age 34 as a
Chippewa of the Mississippi Band.
Rev. George Smith (Che-no-din) was born at Gull Lake, Minnesota, in the fall
of 1853. His father was Gah-gah-se-we-gwon and his mother was
Oh-mah-yah-o-say-quay of the Gull Lake Country. There were three boys and two
girls in the family. George, Fred, and John Smith, all three were taught at
White Earth by Rev. Gilfillan for the ministry.
He was ordained to preach the Gospel at the age of twenty-five years and was
in the service for forty-six years, preaching amongst the Indians until his
death, catching the influenza on one of his trips. He died at Ponsford,
Minnesota at the age of seventy-two years.
His first mission was at Raven's Point on the Winibigoshish Lake, going from
there to Red Lake, and then to the Old Agency at Leech Lake and his last
mission was at Ponsford.
He had one of the finest farms in Ponsford. Farming a section of land all
under cultivation."
