[born at Riviere Ouelle; resided at Lac du Flambeau, Wisconsin Territory with
Northwest Fur Company in 1804; managed the post with his brother Paul. In 1818
Basile is listed among the "Roster of Employees" of the American Fur Company.
The town of Beauleu, Mahnomen County, Minnesota, is named after the descendents
of Basile and his Ojibway wife. It is believed that Basile H. Beaulieu died SEP
9, 1838 at LaPointe, Wisconsin and is buried in the Beauleu burial grounds at
La Pointe, Wisc. In the Wisconsin Historical Collections xix, pp. 163-233 is
published a translation of the journal of Francois Victor Mahliot who was in
charge of the Lac du Flambeau post in the year 1804-5, in which he makes
numerous mention of Bazille Beaulieu, and also says that Bazile Beauileu was
employed at Lac du Flambeau by the American Fur Company as an inter-preter at
a salary of $2,400, and was discharged in 1819 (see list in Wisconsin Historical
Collections, xii, page 154.)
