took 3 men: Freeman C. Tyler, Stillman Tyler, & Thomas Walgate, to court in
four separate cases accusing the defendants of taking land unlawfully. The
defendants claimed they bought the land from William Leith, Sr., and paid taxes
on it. The defendants won.
10 Jun 1895: Census, age 90, born Manitoba, father and mother of foreign birth
12 Mar 1898: died and is buried at the Lakeland Cemetary; the cemetary record
says that she was a "squaw of the black race"
[Note: on her son William's death certificate, her maiden name is incorrectly
listed as Bird]

In 1773, James entered the service of Hudson's Bay Company, based in York
Factory. He served inland in the capacity of labourer from 1773 to 1776.
From 1786 to 1895, James Sr. served as a stersman inland from York Factory, and
from 1793 to 1795, he was left in charge at Buckingham House, as William
Tomison was away during that time. In late October of 1796, James fell ill and
at only 42 years of age, he died. He was buried near the post.
