[Powell 8/0065] [From a letter to George Saice, Esq. of Mahnomen, Minnesota,
from Gordain Cain and R.J. Powell, JAN 8, 1915:
"We have your reploy to our inquiry touching your family history, and we
thank you for the same.
"Your reply was so prompt, complete and satisfactory that we feel it is our
duty to ask of you some further information to assist us in our very difficult
work of preparing a satisfactory roll of the White Earth Indians. Especially
difficult is the problem prsented by the Pembina allottees, who are so
unrelated to the other bands that we can learn nothing by reference to the
history of the members of other bands on the reservation.
"Who was the mother of your half brother, Joseph?
"Did your father's sister, Annie marry a Lequier whose first name was
Frank? Did they have any children, and what are their names, whether living
or dead?
"Did your sister Madeline have a daughter named Mary, and did Mary marry
a man named Henry Starkey, and if so, who were the parents of this Henry
Starkey?
"Did the Lequier who married your Aunt Annie also marry a woman whose last
name was Montreuille, and did this Lequier and the woman named Montreuille
have a duaghter named Eliza, who married a white man named Henry Starkey.
"Our information is that your Aunt Annie and her husband, Francois
Parisian, had a daughter named Eliza and that this daughter Eliza married
Joseph Montreuille. Is this true?
"The allotment schedule mentions the children of Eliza Starkey, who was,
as above stated, the child of Lequier and the Montreuille woman, and among
those children are three others who are called nephews and nieces. These
latter three are named Sarah, Henry, and Willie, and this Henry is the one,
who, we think, married your sister Mary.
"Who was Michael Lequier, who married Mary Vevier? Was he a brother of the
man who married your Aunt Annie?
"Who was Xavier Lequier? Was he also a brother?
"Who was Mary Lequier, who married Felix MARand?
"We have asked a great many questions above, and hope that you will do us
the favor of making reply to the best of your knowledge, as it will assist us
greatly.
"Thanking you in advance, we beg to remain,
"Very truly yours,"
[Powell 8/0066] [From a letter dated JAN 12, 1915, from George Saice,
Mahnomen, Minnesota]
