Henry Adams Pemberton was born March 15, 1831 in Canton, St. Lawrence
County, New York. He came to Minnesota around 1856. He seems to have been a
trapper, bar keep, and served in the Civil War as an ambulance driver in the
8th Minnesota Infantry. He was described as being 5'9" tall, with hazel eyes
and brown hair and a fair complexion. Shortly after arriving in Minnesota, he
married Harriet Martin on January 6, 1856 in Morrison County. Harriet has been
raised around Belle Prairie by whites and some of her brothers were too. One of
her brothers went on to become Chief up at Leech Lake. The Pembertons made
their home in East Princeton of Mille Lac Co.
Their son John B. was born at Fort Ripley November 15, 1857. He married
Nancy Hill and they made their home in Mora, Kanabec Co. until the time of
their removal to White Earth some time in the 1890's.
Their son John L. (also known as Chief Ay-cogeshig) served in WWI and was
married twice. He rededicated the statue of the God of Peace that stands in
St. Paul's City Hall. He was very prominent in Indian matters and had numerous
children.
While this summary lacks many interesting details, I hope that it will
give an historical insight into the Pembertons and their geographical as well
as historical connections in the state of Minnesota.
