[J.G.M. p. 42 ff] "Grandfather Allan was born at Terrebonne, near Montreal,
JUN 3, 1803, and he received a common school education at his native village.
This prepared him for a clerkship in a county store. When his brother William
visited home in 1820 he was easily induced to return to America with him.
They got a late start in the fall because of delays in the settling of my
great grandfather's estate, and winter overtook them before the end of the
trip. I understand they went by water up the Ottawa River to a portage on
Lake Nipissing and then into Georgian Bay and on to Sault St. Marie.
Somewhere along the way winter put an end to winter travel and they were
obliged to stay at one of the trading posts while the ice thickened. Then
they started on foot and, when the snow was sufficiently deep, they used
snowshoes. Over the ice of Lake Superior they reached old Superior in FEB
1821. Here Grandfather Allen signed with the American Fur Company for a five-
year apprenticeship. I understand that during this period he was sent out to
various places under the guidance of Uncle Bill, and he seems not to have
stayed in any one place very long. One of these places was Red Lake.
"In 1825 he married the daughter of a union between Chaboillez, Monsieur
Charles (an Indian trader) and an Indian woman (said to be the daughter of a
Michigan chieftain) and she was the source of my Indian blood. Allan and
William were Scotch and entirely white. I have a leather wallet on which he
wrote with pen and ink the names and places and dates of all his children.
He had quite a large family and only two of his children were born in the same
place. Moreover, there is quite a difference in the ages of the children born
in that place, which means that he went away and came back again. Here is his
family..."
