!NAME: Manypenny, Benjamin [Powell]

!NAME: Manypenny, Louis (ABT 1843 - JAN 16, 1925) [V.R.]

!GENEALOGY_COMPILED_BY_VIRGINIA_ROGERS: Broken Tooth Genealogy, #158, Louis
Manypenny was a Chippewa enrolled at Bad River. In 1888 he taught at the Pine
Point Boarding School on the White Earth Reservation. His father (or mother)
was allotted as Bad River #31.
From CHIPPEWA INDIANS of Yesterday and Today, by Sister M. Carolissa Levi,
FSPA: 'Other surnames originated purely as nicknames. When the Reverend
Manypenny left the Bad River Reservation, he gave his tall silk hat to one of
the Indians who had manifested a special admiration for it. When his old
Indian was seen wearing the hat, the other Indians greeted him as 'Manypenny.'
The name remained with him and was inherited as a surname by his descendants to
the present
time.
