  Marlon Dale Johnson, 33, of Ponemah died Saturday, Sept. 3, 1994, near
Washkish.
  A wake begins today at the Ponemah Community Center.  Services, in the Indian
Custom, are at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Ponemah Community Center.  Interment will
be in the family burial grounds at Ponemah, with arrangements by the
Olson-Schwartz Funeral Home.
  Active pallbearers will be Gary Martin, Gary Auginash, Bruce Jourdain, Darwin
Sumner, Frank Spears and Daryl Kingbird.  Honorary pallbears are Daniel
Johnson, Richard Johnson, Mitchell Johnson, Daniel Crowe, Julius Schoenborn,
Jr., and Chad Hardy.
  Mr. Johnson was born 18 Aug 1961, at Redlake to Dellis and Roseadelle
(Fairbanks) Johnson.  He grew up and attended school in Ponemah, lived there
and worked for the U.S. Forest Services. He worked for 10 years with the Bureau
of Indian Affairs forestry division at Redlake as a firefighter and forest
development worker and for the last three years was the squad boss for the
Ponemah squad.  He was one of the original fire crew members who went to Boise,
Idaho, in 1985, the first Indian fire crew ever to go from Minnesota to the
Western states for fire fighting.  From 1985 to 1994 he never missed a dispatch
to the West to fight fire and during that time worked in the States of
Missouri, Idaho, California, Oregon, Washington, Nevada, Utah, Montana,
Wyoming, Arizona and California.  This year he had already been three times to
Colorado, Washington and Montana.  Whether in fire fighting or tree planting,
he was known as a top-notch worker.
  He is survived byhis mother of Ponemah; six sisters, Phyllis Johnson of
Minneapolis, Glendoris (Robert) Geboe of Ponemah, Winona Johnson of Bemidji,
Rebecca Johnson of Ponemah, Julia A. Johnson of Warroad and Tina Johnson of
Ponemah; two brothers, Robert Fairbanks and Bradley Johnson of Ponemah; two
daughers, Salina and Melodie Johnson of Minneapolis; a friend, Linda R. Lussier
of Warroad; numerous nieces and nephews; three aunts; and three uncles.
  He was preceded in death by his father; his maternal grandpernts, Archie and
Susan Fairbanks; and paternal grandparents, Ethel and Rufus
Johnson.
