!GENEALOGY_COMPILED_BY_VIRGINIA_ROGERS: [V.R., Broken Tooth Genealogy, #426]

[From Mainly Logging [after V.R.], "In 1893 and '94 times were very hard and
C.A. Smith was logging up towards Kelliher, not too far from the lake. Lots
of farmers and lumberjacks had come in from North Dakota and were paid 13 or
14 dollars a month. The men wouldn't work for that, and one could see fires
all over the woods. The men had built them to keep warm while the loafted.
The old-time lumberjacks didn't like to see North Dakota farmers butting in
on their work, and they were disgruntled. On the other hand, the grain raised
in North Dakota wasn't worth anything and the farmers had to find employment.
Those were good old Democratic hard times - 1983. You couldn't buy a job.
When those men came out of the woods in the spring they probably had enough
money to buy a pair of shoes, a hat, and some trousers. Some their money was
all gone and they were waiting for a drive to start. Spears had a big gang
of them in his hotel and had to put some of them out because he couldn't stand
the pressure. His hotel here was a little long yellow building. Then the men
wento a house across from the Fairbanks store -- Mark Hart's house -- near the
creek on the same side of the road. They rented the building and brought in
hay and straw for bedding and cooked in primitive fashion, living as a 'boo'
gang."
