she lived to be 100 years old; she was educated at an Indian School in
Philadelphia and taught school on the White Earth Reservation for a time.
[Cass Lake Times, JUL 12, 1951], "Katie Burns came to Cass Lake from Grand
Rapids about the same time that the Great Northern railway came into Cass
Lake. Her father was an Irishman, Christopher Burns, and her mother was of
Ojibway descent. Katie combined the best qualities of both races. Pretty as
a picture and as graceful as a woodland deer, Katie was an expert fisher and
hunter and she knew the north woods and lakes an drivers as a book. She
married a railroad man named VanPelt. VanPelt's addition to Cass Lake is a
part of Katie Burn's allotment. Katie's identity and contributions to Cass
Lake were overshadowed by the names of her big brother Mark Burns and an older
sister, Nellie (Lydick) and by the fact that for many years she has been Kate
Nelson, but Katie's contribution to Cass Lake has been genuine and
substantial. The Cass Lake Indian Hospital sets on land that was owned and
donated to the cause of better health among the Indians by Katie Burns VanPelt
Nelson. Proud of her Indian ancestry, Katie is an authority on Chippewa
(Ojibway) customs and legends. One story told about Katie, who by the way is
a faithful Episcopalian is about when Spiritualism was sweeping the county.
`I want to talk to my mother's mother,' Katie told the medium. After a short
pause, clear and distinct came a voice with a slight Swedish accent. `It's a
fraud,' said Katie, `my grandmother could talk only in Chippewa.'"
three boys and one girl, all born after 1900 with George Van
