the Agreement of 1889 at age 36 as a Chippewa of the Pillager bands. He was a
logging contractor on the White Earth Reservation in 1898.
September 12, 1907 -- Pioneer:
"Marshall A. Spooner, Judge of the Fifteenth judicial district, has granted
an absolute divorce of Peter Bonga from his wife, Elizabeth Bonga, otherwise
known as Mahkoonce.
"The decree of divorce is a unique one, in that both parties to the decree
are full-blooded Chippewa Indians; and it is believed that the proceedings for
the divorce and the granting of the prayer is the first action of the kind ever
recorded among the Indian tribes of Minnesota.
"According to the decree, the plaintiff instituted proceedings for divorce
from the defendant at Walker, last April. Both are members of the Chippewa
band of Leech Lake Indians.
"Peter Bonga is 60 years of age, while his wife is 40.
"The plaintiff and the defendant were married on the Leech Lake Chippewa
Reservation, on or about the first of July A.D. 1882, and thereafter lived as
husband and wife until defendant deserted plaintiff on or about the 15th day of
September, A.D. 1905 ... "

son of a noted American Fur Company trader and later government Indian Agent in
northern Minnesota
Born "somewhere in Northern Minnesota" and later lived on the White Earth
Reservation. He was a farmer and served as an interpreter for the government
in its dealings with the Ojibway. He is listed in the 1900 Federal Census of
White Earth at the age of
46.
