Isaac Batt was employed by the Hudson's Bay Company in the various capacities
of Labourer, Steersman and Canoeman, almost continuously during the
thirty-seven years between 1754 and 1791. Throughout the greatr portion of
this period he was stationed at York Factory on Hudson Bay and latterly he at
various posts inland from that place. In 1781, he is referred to as "a good
canoeman and best hunter." In a contract dated 1709, he is described as of
"Stanstead, Hertfordshire, England," when his age is given as 64 years.
Two years later he is described in a List of Servants in Hudson's Bay as "old
and worn out," although his contract was not due to expire until 1794. An end,
however, was soon brought to his career, when he was stationed at Manchester
House, an H.B.C. Post situated on the North Bank of the North Saskatchewan
River about 42 miles above Battleford. It appears that in 1791, during the
absence of William Tomison on a summer visit to York Factory, Batt was
permitted by James Gaddy, who had been left in temporary charge at Manchester
House, to accompany two Indians, who had recently visited the neighboring post
of the North West Company, on a hunting expedition on the South side of the
North Saskatchewan River. Batt took with im on this expedition "six good
Horses two Guns and several other articles with a good leather Tent accompanied
by John Thompson, a woman, and three boys." One of the two villianous Indians,
who, it seems were already notorious for having "run away with other Men's
women," whilst Batt was handing the "Calumet" to his companion, shot him
through the head and proceeding to strip him and the women of all their
clothes, went off with the
whole."
