in July and August, 1810, August, 1811, July, 1816 and August, 1817 to
winter on the Mississippi River. Hired by the American Fur Company on
August 20, 1818 to carry on trade in 1818 and 1819 on the Mississippi River
at Paririe du Chien and above, for which the American Fur Company agreed to
supply him with goods at cost plus 5 percent. Aird was to receive a half
share on the profits or losses of the department. Accounts relating to
"James Aird's Outfit," which became James H. Lockwood's Upper Mississippi
Department after Aird's death on February 27, 1819, may be found in the 1817
journal (page 336) of cited document. For more on Aird, see Wisconsin
