killed in a batle with the Sioux. Que-we-zaince means old man. It was aname
given to many babies because of the newborn's resemblance to an old man. The
Chippewa chose other names when they came of age or were given names by a
person of importance.
!NOTE: in the Anishinabe Ojibway language, Que-we-zaince (and various
permutations of spelling) means "Little Boy." This name, along with
E-quay-zaice [Little Girl], Min-de-moien [Old Lady], and Ah-ke-wain-zee [Old
Man] are found frequently on the U.S. Indian records. In some cases, they were
used by the Indian Agent because he did not know the proper name of the person
to whom he referred; in other cases, particularly with regard to the Metis,
these names were used in lieu of European/Christian names, creating a more
"Indian" appearing population on the records sent to the Washington, D.C.
U.S. Indian Office.
The names Quay-we-zaince and E-quay-zaince prooperly referred to Anishinabe
Ojibway people with regard to infants and very young children who had not yet
gotten a more personal name.
Anishinabe Ojibway names are religious/spiritual names of the Mide philosophy.
The Christianized Metis did not have access to Mide, and some of their "Indian
names" are very funny. The researcher is referred to Bishop Baraga's
"Dictionary of the Otchipwe
Language."
