!Department of the Interior, In the Matter of the Petitions of Charles T.
Wright et. al. for the purification of the White Earth Indian Roll, E99 C6W9,
page 23: ""The father of O-ge-mah-ge-shig-o-quay was a French Canadian named
John Batiste Bessener. (See record, p. 688.) At this point attention is called
to the claim of one of the respondents, Gus H. Beaulieu, that
O-ge-mah-ge-shig-o-quay was a daughter of Ah-pish-gah-gog. (See record, pp.
600-603, 643, 598. The absurdity of this claim readily appears when we reflect
that Ah-pish-gah-gog was a full-blood Indian [sic], and if he were the father
of O-ge-mah-ge-shig-oquay he musth have had a white wife, a thing unknown among
the Chippewas of that period. Moreover, we have the direct testimony of Louis
Neveaux, a nephew of O-ge-mah-ge-shig-o-quay, who states that her mother was a
squaw and her father a French Canadian named John Baitste Bessener, and that
she was not to his knowlege any relation to Ah-pish-gah-gog. (See record, p.
688.)
