born on Lake Superior, died at Superior, Wisconsin; whe was buried on
Wisconsin Point, then moved in 1918 with others buried there and reinterred
on the Chippewa Burial Ground, St. Francis Cemetary, Superior. His wives and
some of his children are probably buried there, also. He may have been the
oldest son of Chief Kah-dah-wah-be-day as he signed the treaty of 1925 with
his father. He is not listed as a son by R.J. Powell but there is no doubt
that he was. He may have had a different mother than the other children. He
signed all the treaties from 1825 as a 2nd or 34d Chief from Fond du Lac.
In a report on the treaty of 1855 at La Pointe, Wisconsin, it is stated
that Chief Loons Foot whose lodge was near the Indian Agent's residence, had
made a lengthy talk and that he was a brother of Mrs. Judge Ashman at the Soo.
In Kohl's report on Mongosid and his ancestors, he gives a copy of a
paper shown to him: "This is to certify, that the Chief Shingoop (Balsam), the
speker Nanganop, the headman and warriors of the Fond du Lac of the
Chippeways, have this day requested that Mangusid be hereafter recognized as
their chief pacificator, and they have solemnly promised to refer to him all
difficulties that may arise hereafter between them, and to abide by his
decision."
Man-go-sid probably had other children than the two given below, but I
have not been able to find them. He was living on Madeline Island in the
1850's. From the La Pointe Register: Mangosid, Angelica, born around 1748,
Fond du Lac, baptized AUG 23, 1840. Godparents were Alexius Brebant and
Angelica Bouvier. One can't help but wonder if this was his mother or
grandmother.
