!Maynard Swan Papers, photostat (probably "The Man who Lived Three Centuries"),
page 42, ... the principal chief at Leech Lake during the early rulership of
our hero Smith was Eshke-bog-e-coshe or Flat Mouth, though he was sharing his
seat of authority, at least in points of wisdom, with an exceedingly impressive
character known as Kechi Osaye or Elder Brother. The Rev. W. T. Boutwell, who
established Minnesota's first mission-school in 1833 on the shores of Trader Bay
in Leech Lake, had this to say about Kechi Osaye:
He is an Indian among a thousand for his sincerity, integrity and inflexible
love of truth and equity. He is the most worthy Indian I have ever met ...
He is not afraid to speak his mind fully, however he may differ from
others.
