!In the Department of the Interior, E99 C6W9, In the matter of the Petition of
Charles T. Wright et. al. for the Purification of the White Earth Indian Roll,
p. 22:
"Bwan-e-quay was a full-blood Indian [sic], residing at Cass Lake, Minnesota,
and Married an Englishman, and Sha-gon-aush-e-quay was therefor a half breed.
(See record, pl. 195, also a schedule appended to a treaty of August 5, 1926, 2
Kappler, 272.) The marrige between John H. Fairbanks and Shah-gon-aush-equay
must have occurred a short time after [1908], for the reason, among others,
that the acedule appende to the treaty of August 5, 1926, refers to
Shah-gon-aush-equay as the wife of John H. Fairbanks."
!XTL: "Bwan-e-quay" is derived from the Chippewa word, Bwan, which has been
translated variously as "Sioux," "Iroquois," and "Carrier of heavy burdens,
(i.e. voyageur)." E-quay is a Chippewa word for "girl" or, by implication,
"woman."
